The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden

mystery, obsession, two timelines
Review
I just couldn’t get into. You know what’s the problem about Freida McFadden’s writing? Too.many.books! Ms McFadden has come out with her fourth release this year. Fourth!! The writing is certainly suffering.
1- The characters were supposed to be mature, all in their 30’s but they didn’t present that age at all! It felt like they were all in High school.
“Well,” he adds, excpet fpr your arms.”
“My arms?”
“They’re kind of flabby.” He wrinkles his nose. “But other than that, wow. Like I said, you’re the prfect woman.”
“Wait. My arms are too flabby? Did he really just say that to me?”
*eye roll* #1
“Oh my God,” she pipes up. “Sydney obviously doesn’t want to talk to you!” She reaches into her purse and pulls out her phone. “Either get out of here right now, or I am dialing 911 to tell them a creepy guy with a ponytail is harassing us.”
“No, you’re making a big mistake if you ever go near my friend again!” Bonnie snaps. She punches 9 and 1 into her phone, then holds it up. “Do you want me to dial the last 1? I’m happy to do it.”
“Kevin gets the message this time. He scurries away, his ponytail bouncing behind him. It’s only when he’s out of sight that I nudge Bonnie. “Nice job. You are seriously kind of a badass.”
*eye roll* #2 and many more! Specially with Tom’s POV.
2- Tom’s POV was a torture to read. He sounded more like a child to me than a teenager. Everything was just so stilted.
3- Sidney was dumber than a bag of rocks! Pretty annoying.
4- The writing was absolutely crap. A lot of the descriptions were so bland and plain, as if she was describing facts to us rather than telling a story.
5- It didn’t have the “keep me on my toes” effect like thrillers use to. It was unfortunately not a page turner, more like a chore, to be honest. Couldn’t even finish.
I think Frieda is pretty amazing at creating thrilling storylines. However, she needs more time to execute them well.
“But he’s in his mid-thirties and still single. So there must be something wrong with him. Probably serious commitment issues, like half the other single guys in their thirties.”
“Romance novels give you an extremely unrealistic concept of romance. If I were a character in one of those books, our meet-cute would have quickly been followed by Mystery Man ripping off his T-shirt to reveal gleaming, rock-hard abs and then thrusting his throbbing loins against me.”
Blurb
