Recommendation

Audiobooks for Beginners

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and start listening to audiobooks, but you have no idea where to start. Here’s an audiobook easy guide to getting started, and also a selection of great audiobooks to get you started.

If you’ve spent years reading physical and ebooks, you may not understand what the fuss is all about audiobooks and even be reluctant to try. You may think you’ll lose a lot of the story believing it is easy to get distracted. I’ve been there and now they are my go-to choice. And I’ll tell you why.

Multitask Like a Pro

Torn between reading and doing the dishes? Cleaning the house? Cooking? Doing laundry? Not with audiobooks. Everything from chores to running errands to hitting the gym becomes more exciting once you press play on an audiobook. The format allows you to be productive in more ways than one!

Time Flies

Whether you’re listening as you commute to and from the office each day or hitting the road to travel audiobooks will keep you entertained.

You Will Read More

Many readers find that their reading speed increases once they start listening to audiobooks. Part of this is because they can multitask and read. And you can also adjust the narration speed to go faster than reading with your eyes alone.

Enhance Reading Experience

Audiobook narrators can take your reading experience to the next level. A great narrator can transport you into a story and make you feel as though you truly know the characters. Plus some audiobooks come with full cast recording, music, and sound effects.

The only downside is that as a great narrator can save a bad book, a bad narrator can ruin a good one. But with time you will learn which narrators are for you and which are not.

That sounds great! What do I need to listen?

When it comes to audiobooks, there are both paid and free subscription services. I’ll outline some of the most popular below, but we recommend taking a close look at each platform yourself to find the best fit for you.

Paid subscriptions

Audible lets you make one-off purchases or start a monthly subscription, though its package is what it’s famed for. For £7.99 a month, you get one credit which means you can download and keep any title. Every book you choose is yours to keep, forever – even if you cancel your membership. If you want more bang for your buck, there are higher-priced packages that give you access to additional books and as a subscriber, you get discounts on any books you buy outside your monthly package.

Libro.fm allows members the option of buying audiobooks through their local bookstore! For $14.99 a month, Libro.fm members receive one credit that can be redeemed for any audiobook on their site. Not ready to commit to a monthly membership? This platform allows members to choose an À La Carte option where they can pay as they listen. All books that you purchase are yours forever, even if you end your membership. With an easy-to-use app and a dedication to indie bookstores, Libro.fm is a favorite among many readers.

Storytel is a popular ebook and audiobook platform. For only $12.98 a month you have access to Storytel Unlimited— but the price differs depending on the country. There’s no limit to the amount of titles you can read/listen to. Storytel operates in over 25 markets around the globe and is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.

This comprehensive reading-focused platform gives you unlimited access to over a million titles all wrapped up in one subscription price of $9.99 a month. Well, Scribd also gives you access to ebooks, articles and podcasts too.

Free options

It can be all too easy to forget what an amazing place the library is. Then along comes a smart little lending app that lets you tap into the catalogue of audiobooks (ebooks and mags, too) at your local library, from the convenience of your pocket.

Hate waiting? Hoopla offers readers access to ebooks, audiobooks, music, and movies from their local library and there are no holds. Bookworms who love reading a book and then immediately watching the film adaptation will find Hoopla to be a great one-stop shop.

Spotify has an extensive collection of audiobooks, but the quality of the narrators is hit or miss.

Some tips for beginners:

Sign up for a free trial. It is good testing the waters before your final decision. Lots of big stores – including Audible – offer free trials. They’re a great way to experiment. Dip in and out of a few books, and you’ll begin to get a feel for what you enjoy most.

Start small. Listening to your first audiobook can be daunting. It’s a skill, and it takes time to adapt to pick up detail. But trust me you will get there. You can either listen to something you’ve read and loved or pick a short story. Or you can also listen while you read. You can find free audiobooks on Kindle Unlimited.

Toggle the narration speed. Some people genuinely prefer to listen to a faster narration, which as a bonus means you read (or listen) quicker too. Others prefer a slower speed, so they don’t miss any action. Play about with the speed to find a pace that suits you.

Now that you are all set. Enjoy your audiobook!

BLURB: It’s officially booty o’clock, I’m alone again in my kitchen choking down a slice of terrible chocolate cake…and I’m pretty sure I just got drunk texted by the man I have a ginormous crush on.

I’ve been daydreaming about Eliot Hoffman’s dimples for two months, and even though I’m sure this was a mistake on his end, it doesn’t mean it’s not an opportunity on mine. It’s the middle of the night, and I just wanna talk to him. So I text him back.

And then somehow we keep talking…ALL NIGHT. We’re both insomniacs, so talking all night soon turns into talking EVERY night.

Except for who I really am. It’s the only question of his I won’t answer.

As my crush turns into an avalanche of Eliot, I think of him all the time now. But if he knew who I was, the entire house of cards we’ve built this relationship on would come toppling down. I want him to be mine, but we might never be more than just a sweet dream…

THOUGHTS:

I have listened to countless audiobooks over the last 5 years and this is the simply the best audiobook I’ve ever listened so far. It is like you are listening to an episode of VH1’s Behind The Music. It’s incredible!

BLURB: Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 :

Although the writing was in fact amazing and compelling, and it did have me turning pages, I wasn’t completely in love with the storyline. I’m doing my best at not being so judgmental when reviewing this. So bear with me! 😅

If life taught me a lesson is that you can’t judge others when you’ve never been in their shoes. Also, be careful of throwing stones, we all live in a glass house too. We are all human beings after all. We make mistakes, we make poor decisions, we make others suffer. The bottom line is, did you learn your lesson?

That being said, it was still not easy for me to read about Beth’s story because Frank was a very good man, a too good husband to her and also a good dad. He loved his wife with all his heart. He would give her the moon if he could to. Damn! He gave her more than that. And that’s what makes SO hard for me not to judge Beth. I believe her vulnerability made her take pretty poor decisions in life. And sadly, those decisions affected everyone around her. However, she’s learned her lesson and that’s life. Learn with our mistakes and not repeat them. Trying to become a better version of ourselves. I’m genuinely glad she’s got another chance for happiness. We can see she is a different Beth after everything and for that this book was truly beautiful. That is exactly how each of us is, imperfectly beautiful. This book definitely evoked strong emotions and made me cry in the end. I wonder how long it will be before my heart lets this one go… it definitely deserves all the stars.

Have a great week, everyone! 💋

1- The author should do some research when writes about something she doesn’t have much experience with or knowledge. False positive pregnancy test is very and I mean very rare. Almost impossible! And it only can happen in rare cases like testing too soon after a miscarriage, abortion, or childbirth or if you are taking fertility medications that contain hCG. So if the test says you are pregnant, YOU ARE PREGNANT! The opposite though, it’s more common.

2- While the hero was still a virgin he was way more sexually experienced than the heroine and that bugged me a little. Didn’t he promise all his first to her as well?

3- The plot twist although unexpected, was once again a bit ludicrous. I felt like I was suddenly watching a bad soap opera on TV.

3- Ten years!! Ten f*cking years so they can finally be in the open for the world because they were once step siblings. Their parents married when they were 18! Eighteen!!!!!!! And they were married like for a year or two and then you have to wait 10 years to tell the world you two are togheter. Nope! That was a bit of a strach to me.

4- The ending also felt rushed.

That being said, I read this in one-sitting. Rina Kent’s writing is immersive and full of palpable tension. The chemistry is also off charts! Even if it wasn’t perfect, it was still a great read for me. I will give this 4 stars, nevertheless.

I wish we had more background about Rhys and the lost sister friendship. We are told but never shown they’ve become close and when she passes, she left him as the guardian of her three-year-old child. But here’s the thing, Rhys is a broody guy, the kind that likes his space and privacy, it was hard to see him as a loving and caring dad out of the blue. There was zero relationship developing with the kid. We never saw him interact with the kid before, and has BARELY seen these two together after, for that matter! How on earth am I supposed to see feelings between them? Just because the author told me he loves and cares for the kid I don’t have to suddenly believe her. Show me! Make me feel them!! Make me feel the relationship!!

Also, the chemistry just wasn’t there. All the characters were one-dimensional. And couldn’t get why all the mystery surrounding the hero’s career. About that… Wrestling??? From all the sport in fighting you seriously picked wrestling!? Such a buzzkiller!

𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 :

Idk why I read this when I’m well aware of the fact that Samantha Young’s writing just doesn’t impressed me anymore. Since her On Dublin Street Series, maybe even a bit before that, I am always so bored with her books, so this is entirely on me.

This book was unnecessarily too long. All the explanations and background stories given about every single character from the previous series over family dinners felt a bit overload. If I’m being brutally honest, they felt like fillers. I was so bored.

The banter felt immature and juvenil. Too many side characters, it felt more like the author was trying to set up stories for future books than part of the story. I wish I could say I loved this but sadly I didn’t. However, I’m sure if you are fan of the author you will love this as many other readers have. So I wouldn’t hesitate to read it.

  • ★ FIRST TIME CALLER by BK Borison ★

It started off really strong but once Lucie joined the radio show I started to really have issues with the book and it just went downhill slowly.

1- So Lucie says and I’m quoting her here:

“No, that’s not what I mean. I don’t want to try. All I do is try. All day long, I’m trying and I’m so tired. Why can’t this be the one thing I don’t have to try at? Why can’t it be a thing that just . . . happens? I don’t want—I don’t want to think about what I should say or how I should act or . . . or have talking points in the notes app of my phone for a dinner date at a restaurant that I don’t really like. I want to feel something when I connect with someone. I want sparks. The good kind, you know? I want to laugh and mean it. I want goose bumps. I want to wonder what my date is thinking about and hope it might be me. I want . . . I want the magic.”

That quote gave me the feeling that Lucie wanted love happening naturally. She wanted magic. She wanted fireworks w/out having to try so hard. All she does in life is try. Then all of the sudden the girl was on a radio station talking to listeners looking for love while she specifically said SHE DIDN’t WANT TO HAVE TO TRY SO HARD!??

2- The book was also too long for a contemporary romance. The story wasn’t progressing, I was bored AF at some points.

3- I could understand Lucie’s cute little speech about love getting her on the radio, but all the commotion about it was a bit too much just for that.

4- Aiden was so emotionally unavailable and I saw very little character growth. I wanted more from him. I did like Lucie thou, and I loved her relationship with her daughter!

This book definitely has its cute and sweet moments. The ending was absolutely adorable, not all is lost 😅 but definitely not my favorite from the author. However, I’m clearly in the minority with this one, so don’t let my review sway you from giving it a go, so many other readers loved this!

REVIEW:

Goooooood Lord, I didn’t think that this book was going to rip my heart out and make me sob like it did! Looking at the cover, I was expecting a cutesy breezy book. But to be fair, the authors did warn you that this book was different from anything else they’ve written. The only reason it didn’t earn all the stars from me was because I kind of felt that their relationship was rushed-ish. Maybe it’s me. But I still love this regardless! You better have tissue ready for this one.

★ BOOK REVIEW & RECOMMENDATION ★ Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall

꧁•⊹٭ love triangle ༊*·˚. presente and past timeline ༊*·˚. mystery ٭⊹•꧂

⚠️ 🅆🄰🅁🄽🄸🄽🄶 ⚠️

∗ infidelity ∗

𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 :

However, I did have a few issues with the story.

𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀 :

★ BOOK REVIEW ★
On Loverose Lane by Samantha Young

🇹 🇷 🇴 🇵 🇪 🇸

enemies to lovers • sport romance • soccer • forced proximity • found family

3 𝔰𝔱𝔞𝔯𝔰 ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗ because of my love for the previous series.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ This is book 1 in the Return to Dublin Street Series, spin-off series from ‘On Dublin Street’. Each one can be read as a complete standalone.

★ FIRST TIME CALLER by BK Borison ★
